The Structure of Duhok University
The University of Duhok (UoD) was established on October 31st, 1992 with two colleges and 149 students. The first colleges established at the University were the College of Medicine and the College of Agriculture. During the first two years, embargoes imposed by the United Nation on Iraq and by the former Iraqi Central Government on Kurdistan Region contributed to the slow-paced growth of the University of Duhok and the poor economic conditions in Kurdistan. Today, the University has expanded to contain 17 colleges and 75 Departments in diverse fields, as itemized below:

1. College of Medicine
College of Medicine is a part of the division of Health Sciences and a component of the Iraqi Health System in Kurdistan Region. The College accepted its first students in 1992 and is noted for the excellence of its educational and research programs. Seventy to eighty medical students matriculate each year, selected from more than thousands applicants. The college has now graduated about 760 doctors and given postgraduate degrees to 208 participants in different disciplines of medicine. A significant improvement had been achieved in building new departments, updating the library and initiating scientific partnerships with other universities and institutes. The college continues to have one of the premier medical education programs in the country. It has developed a partnership with different distinguished national and international universities, institutes and organizations. The commitment of the college of Medicine to diversity is a core value.

2. College of Agriculture

The College was one of the two colleges instated when the University of Duhok was initiated in 1992, over an area of 100 acres (160 donums), 15 km west of Duhok designated for agricultural research purposes. This allocated land is irrigated by local springs for growing rice, tomatoes, sesame, and other crops. Now, there is about a hundred acres of agricultural land with two artesian wells for growing grains, legumes, and other summer and winter crops. In addition, there is an orchard of olive and almond trees that is irrigated by a spray system. The College also possesses two air conditioned greenhouses, several plastic houses, a well-equipped plant tissue culture laboratory, two lath houses, an apiary field, and fields where poultry, sheep, fish and cows are raised. The program of the College is linking the most updated technological information in this field with the needs of the local economy and local job market. Today, it seeks to provide the region with specialized agricultural staff who will contribute to the development of the agricultural sector of the region.

3. College of Engineering

The College offers a Bachelor’s degree according to specialization for undergraduate study. A master degree is offered for graduate study in the field of Civil Engineering and Water Resources Engineering. The College of Engineering has a national reputation in Engineering and is committed to educating students for lifelong success in the diverse world of industry. It offers an undergraduate degree in four different fields of engineering including Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Water Resources Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering. It also offers a Master of Science Degree in Structural Engineering, Soil and Foundation Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Sanitary Engineering. The educational environment of the College of Engineering is designed to meet the student's needs and to provide them with professional skills required for becoming effective engineers. The ultimate goal of our college is to provide and practice orientated education for our students and create future focused engineering minds with vision.

4. College of Humanity Sciences
The University of Duhok is committed to the task of building a new Kurdish Society. Hence, a great interest has been focused on preserving Kurdish national awareness by encouraging the use of the Kurdish language, preservation of Kurdish art, and acknowledgment of the history of Kurdish people. To this end, the founding of the College of Arts in 1994 was essential to successfully accomplish this undertaking. The need for efficient English interpreters and translators in government and private agencies prompted the development of the department of English Language in 1996. The department of English is also responsible for teaching English throughout the University of Duhok and runs extensive English Language courses for the teaching and administrative staff of the university and other governmental agencies.

5. College of Dentistry
This college has been running an undergraduate dental program which was established in November 2008. The first batch of dental students is now in the second year of the BDS program. The accomplishments manifested by the different branches of science have inspired the University of Duhok to develop a dental department within the college of Medicine that can meet the challenges of the next generations’ dentists. It is committed to pursue excellence in Dental Sciences by having a leading role in the region’s dental education, community services, research and development. The college’s mission is to establish a Regional Center of Excellence in Dental Education through an innovative and a high quality teaching-learning approach. The College is conjuring world class dental community services and advanced research and development programs that will graduate knowledgeable oral physicians who are lifelong learners. Such physicians will serve the needs of Duhok City as well as Kurdistan regions. The College also strives to provide for a cooperative learning environment for students.

6. College of Pharmacy 
College of Pharmacy is improving health services in Duhok City. It provides the most updated education in both theoretical and practical fields of pharmacy. 
One of the main goals of the College of Pharmacy is to alumna competent pharmacist with advance medical and clinical knowledge and skill in order to enhance the active role of pharmacist in the management of patients and improve reputation of pharmacist among the society and medical community. After completion of five years of study, the alumna will acquire a Bachelor degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences that will make them be capable of working in every health facilities. Their practical education is organized at the health facilities of the Department of Health at Duhok City.

7. The College of Veterinary Medicine
It was established in June of 1996 as one of the leading veterinary research centers in Kurdistan. It provides support for the veterinary profession through diagnostic services and continuing professional department courses. The programs of study offer theoretical, practical and clinical experiences in various aspects of veterinary medicine and surgery. The official language of instruction is English. The main goal objective of the College of Veterinary Medicine is to prepare competent students to meet the present and future demands of their professional services. The graduates (veterinarians) are expected to fulfill the aspects of the health care profession that encompass animals, human and environmental health aspects such as caring for food animals (cattle, sheep, goat, poultry, and fish) diseases prevention and treating animals using recent therapy and performing surgery.

8. College Administration and Economics
The College of Administration and Economics was established in December of 1996. The time duration of study is four years after which the graduates are awarded a B.A. degree according to their specialization of undergraduate study. On the August 13, 2007, the scientific and consultative office was opened in this college. Also, on January 09, 2012, the Scientific Research Center was opened in this college. The center is specialized in scientific studies and researchers in legal, financial, economic, administrative, accounting and statistical studies.

9. College of Science

The College of Science was established in 1997 and offers a B.Sc. degree in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Sciences. The main vision of the academic staff members is to make their College of Science to be a center of scientific and technological excellence, nationally and internationally, and serve the community as they stride towards this goal. The powerful educational effectiveness of the College of Science comes from linking facts, theory, inquiry, discovery, and solutions to real-world problems. The College aspires to the highest standard of excellence in scholarships. To achieve its vision of excellence in both teaching and research, the College aims to teacher-scholar model, where academic members are effectively skilled teachers meaningful of how students learn, integrate teaching with research. Active cross-disciplinary collaborations and partnerships with centers of excellence abroad encouraged and viewed as essential to the teaching-research mission of the college.

10. College of Law and Political Science
It was founded in (1997-1998) academic year as Department of Law in the College of Administration and Economics. It became an independent college according to the decision of Higher Education and Scientific Researches Council No. 15 in May 22, 1999. The College started to admit students for the year 1999-2000 in the Department of Law. It then has started to receive students to evening study as well for the academic year of (2003-2004). This evening study has been ended in (2013-2014) and no more students have been admitted. The college was then become a Faculty on December 12, 2013. Later on, it became a College again after dissolution of Faculty system in 2015. The duration of study in the college is four years and the alumnae are awarded a Bachelor in Law Science and Political Science.

11. College of Basic Education
The College of Basic Education was established in 2003. It began as a department named Department of Teachers within the College of Arts in 2002. The college has developed the concept of education by introducing advanced teaching methods and publishing modern educational approaches, using information and experience gathered through co-operation with educational and cultural establishments in Iraqi Kurdistan. Solutions to local educational problems are being realized, and new generations of educators are being created. The college also provides technical consultation for its individual specializations. The purpose of the College’s diverse Departments is to prepare students for being qualified and skilled teachers for primary and intermediate schools.

12. The College of Physical Education
The College has been established in 2005. It was formerly a sub-department in the College of Education. Aside from the academic study, the college offers special training courses for teachers as continuous education. It has philosophical visions to deepen the modern belief about the career in Physical Education amongst societal sectors and spread its rightful concepts for practicing them. It also aims to develop a plan to change the physical, emotional, social, and practical means of attaining the best physical fitness. The college concentrates on dealing with science related to the physical field and activates the academic and educational connection through technology and communication.

13. College of Spatial Planning and Applied Science 
The early stages of the College of Spatial Planning and Applied Science began in 2007 when the Higher Institute of Planning was established at UoD on April 01, 2007 as a postgraduate institute in the multidisciplinary field of spatial planning. 
The mission was to supply the public and private sectors in Kurdistan Region with integrated planners who comprehend and cater for the needs and conflicting interests of different aspects of the sectorial development plans.

The presidency of the University of Dohuk

 Postgraduate studies leading to higher diploma were commenced inOctober 2008. Postgraduate diploma studies continued till 2011. In a separate strand, M.Sc. study in spatial planning was started in 2010. Collaboration and partnership with the Faculty of Spatial Planning at TU Dortmund/Germany constituted the cornerstone of the internationalization effort of the School of Planning in the UoD. There has been several DAAD supported grants for strengthening planning education in Iraq and drawing up a curriculum for a joint bachelor degree program between TU Dortmund and the UoD. Several other universities were invited to take part. The current joint bachelor program with TU Dortmund started in the College of Spatial Planning and Applied Science in 2011. German professors are playing active roles in the implementation of the agreed upon program in the way of teaching as well as capacity building for our academic staff. The senior undergraduate students of this program take one of their courses in TU Dortmund as well as in German institutions that deal with spatial planning. 

14. College of Nursing
The College of Nursing is committed to play an active role in fulfilling the community needs and thus aims at improving health services in Duhok. Its main goal is to train competent nurses with advanced medical and clinical knowledge and skills. The college also provides review courses and training for nurses who have already graduated. The nursing profession in the region has gained considerable importance with the advancements of medical sciences in general. The College of Nursing provides up-to-date education in both theoretical and practical fields of nursing. Students complete a bachelor's degree in four years. Practical training is implemented at the health care facilities of the Department of Health in Duhok.

15. College of Science and Education-Akre 
The College of Science and Education in Akre has been established on December 14, 2009. It is one of the colleges affiliated with the University of Duhok. The college is committed to the task of building a new educated society and consisted of five departments, namely, Department of Arabic Language, Department of Social Studies, Kurdish Language Department, English Language Department, and Mathematical Science Department. The College’s strategy is to prepare the students educationally and scientifically with clear steps starting from the first year until they complete their study. The College seeks to train well-qualified intermediate and secondary schools teachers through modern methods of teaching by developing their ability to access information and increasing their knowledge of their specialization. Students will acquire different educational and scientific experiences. The college will improve their skills in language sciences and educational psychology to be professional teachers in the future in such a way that will make them to be able to build a fresh and novel society in Akre.

16. College of Health Sciences 
The College of Health Sciences is a new academic college which established in 2012. Its mission is to prepare highly skilled health care professionals and specialists in an integrated and multidisciplinary learning environment. The College of Health Sciences offers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate and research programs in health sciences, diagnosis of diseases, medical anesthesia along with other specializations plans and strategies for the future. In liaison with health care professionals, the college aims to fulfill the growing demand for specialized technical non-clinical and well-trained staff in various aspects of medical technologies. This is done by incorporating scientific knowledge with laboratory training skills and clinical placement opportunities to improve and maintain personal and community health.

17. College of Basic Education-Amedy
This is the newest college that has been established in 2016 within the UoD and consists of two academic departments: English Language and of Social Studies. The college has developed the concept of education by introducing advanced teaching methods and publishing modern educational approaches using information and experience gathered through co-operation with educational and cultural establishments in Kurdistan.
